Rep. Diane Black on Texas Abortion Case: ‘No Such Thing as a Safe Abortion’

Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) spoke outside the Supreme Court on Wednesday in support of upholding  a 2013 Texas law requiring abortion clinic doctors to have admitting privileges at a local hospital and for abortion facilities to meet ambulatory surgical center requirements.

“I ought to know something about women’s health, and I will tell you that there is no such thing as a safe abortion,” Black said.

The Supreme Court announced in November that it will hear Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt – a lawsuit brought by Texas abortion providers against these restrictions. The Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the landmark abortion case Wednesday.

“The decisions of eight justices in this case will have lasting consequences on the health and safety of women and their pre-born children,” Black said, according to a full copy of her remarks provided by her office.
