Pete Buttigieg holds narrow Iowa caucus lead over Bernie Sanders, partial results show

Pete Buttigieg is leading in a partial count of the Iowa caucuses, as results poured in from the state Democratic Party nearly 24 hours after they were first expected.

With 62% of the vote in, Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, was on top of the crowded Democratic primary field with 27% of state delegate equivalents — the way wins and losses have always been measured in Iowa. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders was next at 25%, followed by 18% for Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Former Vice President Joe Biden was in fourth place, with 16%.

The results capped a day of uncertainty about the Iowa outcome. Results were delayed Monday night by what the state Democratic Party called a “coding issue” due to a new app used to report results.

It’s unclear when the remaining 38% of Iowa caucuses votes will be in.
