Palestinian religious ruling forbids international presence in Jerusalem

“At present, the occupied city of Jerusalem is being subjected to a campaign of Judaization on various levels,” the fatwa states. “The goal is to erase the character of the city and replace it with a fake Jewish identity.”France is pushing for a presidential statement on behalf of the UN Security Council that calls for the deployment of international observers to Jerusalems holy sites, notably the Temple Mount, known as the al-Aqsa mosque to Muslims, to ensure the status quo is maintained, Le Figaro reported on Saturday, citing French diplomats.Clashes began erupting between Palestinians and Israeli police on the Temple Mount in September as the Jewish new year, Rosh Hashanah approached. The clashes then escalated into stone throwing, fire bomb and stabbing attacks around Israel and the West Bank. The French ambassador to Israel, Patrick Maisonnave, met Monday with top officials of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, who also object strongly to the proposal.
