Obama Sees ‘Chance for a Different Type of Relationship’ With Iran

Political developments in Iran in recent years may signal a desire to end the regime’s international isolation, and could provide an opportunity for a different type of relationship with the U.S. in the future, President Obama said in a weekend interview with New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman.
During a conversation focusing largely on the framework nuclear deal with Iran announced on Thursday, Obama described Iran as “a complicated country,” acknowledging that there is deep mutual mistrust, and saying that Iranian activities and rhetoric were contrary to U.S. national interests and those of its allies and friends in the region.

 

At the same time, however, “what we’ve also seen is that there is a practical streak to the Iranian regime,” he said.
