Nearly half of Israelis think two-state solution is dead, poll finds

61.5% say they don’t believe Netanyahu’s commitment to two-state solution to conflict was genuine

The majority of Arab citizens in Israel and close to a majority of Jews believe that the two-state solution to solving the Israeli- Palestinian conflict is dead, according to recent poll.

The monthly Peace Index poll released on Wednesday by the Israel Democracy Institute and Tel Aviv University found that 61.5 percent of the general public said they did not believe Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s commitment to the two-state solution was genuine. Some 26.3% of those surveyed thought the prime minister’s commitment was genuine, and 12.3% declined to answer or said they did not know.

Sixty-four percent of Arabs and 46.3% of Jews said dividing the land and establishing an independent Palestinian state was the best way to ensure Israel’s security.

In contrast, 22% of Arabs and 36.3% of Jews said the best approach would be to annex the territories and establish one state under Israeli rule on all of the land.

Interestingly 17.4% of Jews and 14% of Arabs said they did not know or declined to answer.

The survey was conducted by telephone on October 6-8 and it covered 600 adult respondents, who constitute a representative national sample.

When asked how the public would grade the government for its handling of the current security situation in Jerusalem (on a scale of 0 to 5, with 0 being failure and 5 being excellent), the majority of Jewish Israelis (76.3%) rated the government’s management at 3 or lower.
