Michigan to begin issuing new REAL ID driver’s licenses

Starting Monday, the state of Michigan will begin to issue new and different driver’s licenses.
A federal law is requiring everyone that wants to fly domestically to switch over to what’s called a REAL ID.

After 911, the federal government wanted to find a way to make air travel safer for everyone.
“Starting January of 2018, if your state has not been compliant, and has not been phasing in, for the the enhanced drivers license and the REAL ID to come to terms with that, you may have to present a different form of ID,” said Travel Authority Manager Bonnie Pintozzi.
If you don’t have a REAL ID, which will have a gold star in the upper right hand corner, you will need to fly with a passport or enhanced driver’s license.
Michigan is one of the states that was granted an extension on the REAL ID’s.
