Merkel and Renzi rebuke Vienna for shutting its borders

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi have rebuked the right wing Austrian Freedom Party for plans to build a fence along Austria’s Alpine Brenner Pass along the Italian border.

 

Addressing a press conference in Rome, along with Renzi on Thursday, the German Chancellor said, “Either we defend our external borders and we do it together or we risk falling back into nationalism. This is not a challenge for Greece, Germany or Italy, but these are challenges that have to do with the future of Europe,” Reuters reported.
