Kerry meets Palestinian president amid tensions in West Bank and Jerusalem
Secretary of state John Kerry on Sunday met Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, and urged calm concerning tensions between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank and Jerusalem. Kerry reaffirmed the US commitment to a two-state solution to the conflict.
“The secretary continued to urge for calm and a decrease in violence, incitement and inflammatory rhetoric,” State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement, after the meeting during a visit to Jordan by the top US diplomat.
The talks included discussions of tensions at a Jerusalem holy site – known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary, where al-Aqsa mosque stands, and to Jews as the Temple Mount.
