Iran State Media Says ‘Biggest’ Terror Plot Against Tehran Has Been Foiled

Iran’s Intelligence Ministry thwarted “one of the biggest” terrorist plots to strike Tehran and other sites during the holy month of Ramadan, state media said Monday.

Security and intelligence officials foiled a number of bombings and attacks in different parts of the country, the intelligence ministry said in a statement carried on the state-run IRNA news agency.

Terrorists were arrested, bombs were detonated and equipment was seized, IRNA added.

The disrupted plot was “one of the biggest” to target Iran, according to the semi-official FARS news agency.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Shamkhani praised the “capable and experienced” authorities, telling FARS that “several people” had been apprehended in recent days.

It referred to those arrested as “wahhabi” unbelievers; Wahhabism is an ultraconservative brand of Islam predominantly practiced in Saudi Arabia.
