Fatah and Hamas meet for talks in Qatar
A third round of talks between Fatah and Hamas began on Wednesday in the Qatari capital of Doha, the Ma’an news agency reports.
The talks focused on continuing discussions on strategies for implementing a reconciliation agreement between the sides, members of Fatah told the Palestinian Authority-based outlet.
Hamas and Fatah have been at odds since 2007 when Hamas took over Gaza from Fatah in a bloody coup.
The sides have continued their never-ending war of words despite a unity agreement signed in April 2014 which sought to end seven years of bad blood.
A unity government between Hamas and Fatah collapsed last June when Fatah leader and Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas decided to dissolve it amid a deepening rift between the sides.
Fatah spokesperson Fayiz Abu Aita said on Wednesday the meeting in Doha would be a continuation of previous talks between the two movements, adding that the talks are expected to end on Thursday.
Member of Fatah’s central committee, Azzam al-Ahmad, Sakhr Bseiso, Jibril al-Rujoub, and Muhammad Ishtayyeh, make up part of the Fatah delegation and would reportedly be focusing on listening to Hamas’ stance on forming a national unity government and implementing legislative and presidential elections, Abu Aita said, according to Ma’an.
Abu Aita stressed that the Fatah movement and Abbas are determined to end Palestinian political divisions and achieve national unity.
