It looked like President Trump was well on his way to brokering a Middle East peace deal. Then on December 6, 2017, the president announced the US was recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and would move its embassy there.

The backlash from the Palestinians and the Arabs was immediate and even violent. Palestinian leader immediately announced that all peace negotiations with the United States were over.
