Is There a Difference Between the Soul and Spirit?

The Bible does seem to indicate a unity of the soul and spirit as well as a distinction between the two. Hebrews 4:12 tells the word of God pierces to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit. This shows us that they are combined yet there are slight differences. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 also speaks of the spirit and soul in a separate sense. As a result, it is believed by most theologians that the soul consists of the qualities that make up an individual such as the mind, emotions, intellect, etc. The spirit would then be the immaterial version of us which relates to God. As a result, the two are tied together in a way with a partial distinction.
