What is Speaking in Tongues?

Do We Need to Speak in Tongues to be Saved?

Rich: Hey Irvin, I have a difficult question for you. According to your, “What do You Mean Born Again” teaching, the repentance, baptism and infilling of the Holy Spirit are basically three steps of being born again. My question is, is the infilling of the Holy Spirit always evidence by the gift of speaking in other tongues or is it possible to have the infilling of the Holy Spirit without the gift of tongues? Also, is the gift of tongues a requirement for salvation?

Irvin: Well first of all, you’re asking the question a little bit wrong. You are asking is the gift of tongues required for salvation. You should be asking, is the gift of the Holy Ghost required for salvation? And when we receive the Holy Ghost will we speak in tongues? I know you were asking that and I am being a little technical here, but I am trying not to say the wrong thing. However, there is a difference between the gift of the Holy Ghost and the gift of tongues, that’s the reason I’m saying that. The gift of tongues is one of the 9 gifts of the spirit that is to be coupled with the gift of interpretation, which is to be exercised in the church or in the congregation. However, the gift of the Holy Ghost is a private thing, the Bible says, “He that prayeth in an unknown tongue speaks not unto men but unto God how be it in the spirit he speaks mysteries and edifies himself.” So when you speak in tongues that’s God’s method of filling you with the Holy Ghost. I don’t have time to go more into it but we have a free brochure called, “Tongues Devilish or Devine”, I recommend getting that immediately.
